Step 1:

Scoop white rice into gallon ziploc baggies.  Then squirt the acrylic paint of choice into the baggie.

I didn't measure but a few squirts go a long way!  We use non-toxic acrylic paints from S&S Worldwide.  The colors are So vibrant.

Step 2:

After you ensure the baggie is sealed tightly, let the children squish the paint all around, covering all of the rice.  Fun sensory activity all on its own.

Step 3:

Allow the paint to dry.

We've tried many techniques including leaving the rice inside of the baggie, spreading the rice on a sheet of foil.  Drying time depends on the amount of paint you've used.   I suggest an hour to ensure it's completely dry but I've also seen where it takes 15 minutes.

Step 4:

Add the colored rice to your sensory bin and add some fun objects.

Scoops and cups enhance fine motor skills.  Pots, pans, silverware allow for some dramatic play.  Mini erasers from Target's Dollarspot are always a fun additional (as always make sure it's age appropriate)
