Outer Space Sensory Play

I love coming up with fun and creative sensory play sessions for kids.  We've been studying Outer Space in our homeschool curriculum so today we decided to put a twist on the idea of planets and expand the learning to our sensory bin.

Creating the Planets:

Take baking soda and add drops of water to it until it could be formed into a ball.  Then place in the freezer until they're frozen. We left ours in overnight.

I added white distilled vinegar into little cups then dropped some liquid watercolors in each of them.

These little red cups and white basket are from the Dollar Tree.  We use this setup for all of our liquid watercolors for elementary art sessions.  5 cups fit perfectly in this basket and helps to prevent spilling the cups over.

Providing little droppers are a great way to extend the activity and increase fine motor skills ... plus it's just fun!

We had previously been learning about the planets so when red and yellow were dropped on this planet, she knew right away it was just like Mars.

"Come look at what I just E-X-P-L-O-D-E-D!"

Her little brain started to wonder what would happen if she could dump large amounts of the vinegar into the sensory bin... So, of course, I said to Go For It!
