Skill Development:  Art
Age Range:  Preschool
Messiness:  Medium

Step 1:

Setting up the invitation to create prior to children entering the room allows for a smoother transition and less stress.

Step 2:

Discuss how Picasso was a famous artist who loved drawing at a very young age.  Did you know that at 2 years old his first word was "piz", which was short for "lapiz" (Spanish for pencil).

Step 3:

Look at the painting together and discuss what you see.  Here are a few prompts:

What do you see when you look at this painting?

What shapes do you see?

What colors do you see?

How does this painting make you feel?

Step 4:

Offer the painting supplies to the children and discuss what they're going to paint.  How do they want their painting to make them feel?

We also discuss the emotion "Happy" and learned the sign language.  Check out these sign language flash cards.

She continued to explore the paint and started painting on her hand.  While she painted, she sang "Where is brother finger, where is brother finger..."
